Musée de l’Orangerie

The plan looked like this, pop into BHV department store, blinkers on, no fashion shopping, buy a new memory card, escape unscathed and take the metro directly to Musée de l’Orangerie, hopefully avoiding queues to see the Frida Kahlo exhibition that is currently on display there. Hello and welcome to Bukhara, Uzbekistan! A short 1.45 hour train ride from Samarkhand to Bukhara had me thinking that I had escaped the rain that was predicted in Samarkand and arrive to a sunny day in Bukhara it was not to be.The owner of the guest house and I got to know one another via google translate and because the wifi is next to non-existent, I asked where the nearest local store is. He took it upon himself to walk me, dodging puddles and broken pathways. Telling him that sunshine was predicated at 3pm and that I had a 5km walk planned, he promised me that that would happen. Meanwhile, the grey sky and rain was telling me that it had set in for the day. But, as he predicted, at 2.30pm while he was offering his arm to dangerously dodge traffic across busy roads instead of using pedestrian crossings to take me shopping, the sky cleared and the sun shone. And out I went. When I returned he asked via translate if I achieved my goal. I had my brilliant sunny day walk full of discovery. Now, here’s the downside …. The internet is s***t, and I’m nervous about how I’m going to download and upload images in the way I like to do. However, in the meantime, after this convoluted story, which excludes some great moments, this is one I can share via my phone. Almost at the end of my walk today I visited the Bolo Hauz Mosque. Not an easy place to photograph, I might add. I waited for the tourist buses to leave and then took my moment to photograph as the call to prayer began and this is what you see here. Men came rushing from all directions, expertly flinging off their shoes to enter and pray. A small stall in front of the mosque had beautiful scissors, abandoned while the seller was inside.Patiently I waited and the moment I saw a young man return, we discussed prices and I purchased a pair. Moments later an elderly gentleman and I shared greetings, the true stall holder (perhaps the young man was his grandson) and he asked me in English, where are you from. Australia is more like avstralya and I tried and he responded with kangaroo! I have a small pin of a kangaroo on my backpack and offered to him as a gift. Each time I’m asked where I come from, my pronunciation is not understood and I follow with kangaroo in the hope it may make me understood but it is always lost, except this time, he offered it to me! He tells me to wait and returns with a similar sized pin with the Uzbek flag and offers it to me as a gift. Don’t be mad at me for being weepy again. As we put our hands over our hearts, a form of respect, I walked away beaming and then said to myself; oh, you’re going to cry now aren’t you. I didn’t, just a little damp eye. My introduction to Bukhara today was wonderful and I am so frustrated that I can’t do a proper post and hence all this long drivel. Argh 😫 I have so much to say (more than usual). Anyway. I doubt you got this far anyway and I could just keep chatting to myself. lol. Gotta sort the wifi - if it is even possible. Let the Light Show Begin!As if you haven’t already been exposed to so much colour, this will tip you over the colour edge. A riot of colour!I’ve had all week to film it and silly me chose Saturday night with hundreds of people, jostling for elbow room. 😊I’m on the move tomorrow and have had a hell of a couple of days. I’m not going to discuss it here at the moment until I get home for reasons that will make sense later. Suffice to say, I’ve lost a couple of days and didn’t get to explore everything that I intended. Just letting you know that I’m not doing a lengthy post tonight. I had a fabulous day and not a red dress in sight. It was a big day and now I’m sitting in a restaurant with live Uzbek music and drinking Uzbek wine. I’m guessing by the time I get home I won’t be able to string too many words together. However, tomorrow I need to do chores, pay my overdue tourist tax, which looks like a trek, wash clothes because no machine at my next stop and I will do a post. Forgive me but I’m having fun and don’t want to go home yet. This is a quick iPhone shot when I walked out tonight, even with a terrible photo, The Registan looks gorgeous all lit up. Cheers 🍷 ...
